Salt River Baptist Church
Salt River Primitive Baptist Church, Anderson County, Kentucky
More info...

This cemetery was transcribed by one Earl Spencer and his transcription appears in an informal typewritten booklet, "Anderson County Graveyards", a copy of which is located at the Kentucky History Center, in Frankfort.

Mr Spencer did not transcribe complete dates, just putting down the year of birth and death.   In addition, he did not write down many inscriptions, and in some cases missed initials.

And as with most any publication, he has some errors. This is not an indictment of Mr Spencer.   It is my hope to locate Mr Spencer and/or his kin, to see if I might find out more about him, and possibly get his photo, for this web page, in order to give him more recognition.

It is my hope to reconcile his transcribed list with my set of photos and produce a more accurate and complete list of burials.   Currently, this is not a complete set of photos, for every stone in the cemetery, but I hope to get them all eventually.

It's also my hope that interested persons and family members will come forward and donate money, and perhaps their work, to help with the upkeep of the building and the cemetery.

Per Rev Forrest Chilton, he has invested thousands of dollars and many hours in the restoration of the building and the cemetery.   He also said that over $11,000 was donated to the cause back in the mid-1990s, however, that is only a small portion of the money invested so far.

Rev Chilton gives special thanks to Harold Sims, who has invested a lot of time and work in the project, and who oversees the main project funds.   Rev Chilton also says a number of other people have helped, a few with actual physical labor, like with the electrical wiring and drywalling.

Even if you cannot donate money or time in the upkeep of this precious historical gem, please, at least consider contacting Mr Sims and/or Rev Chilton and thank them for all their hard work and interest in preserving our heritage.   Rev Chilton can be reached at 502-245-8718, however, you can, alternatively, contact the project here.

The project is incorporated as a non-profit.   View their record in the Kentucky Secretary of State's Incorporations Database, here.

My interest in this special place?
It appears that the Barnes family buried here are my ancestors and kinfolk, through my maternal grandmother, Naomi Barnes Harrod (1915-1987), who was the daughter of George Washington Barnes and Lizzie Milburn, who lived at Van Buren, in western Anderson County, and later, in Spencer County (near Fairfield, which is in Nelson Co) at the time of his death in 1934.   He is buried at New Liberty Christian Church, near Van Buren, and she's buried at Defoe Cemetery, in Henry County.
