I was surprised and delighted to get Brian's e-mail and know he had been to the Salt River Primitive Baptist Church.   This has been a long-time project of my cousin, Harold Sims.   His mother's people, the HOUCHINS, are buried there.   Harold, and his wife, Betty, have given untold hours and years trying to preserve this site.

Because of the deterioration, the group has had to replace the siding, doors, windows, and put on a new roof.   They were able to save much of the flooring and are putting in electricity and drywall.   Most of the pews were stolen; but, they have a few of the original pews.   The original pulpit is in the J. C. Penney museum in Missouri.   A church in Anderson County has given them some pews, which are now stored in a barn until they can get the drywall on.

This Sunday, June 9, the First Baptist Church of Lawrenceburg Brotherhood is hosting a picnic there, followed by a speaker, about 2pm, who will give the history of the church.   They hope to get the Brotherhood, and others, interested in helping to preserve the church.

If anyone is interested in learning more about this project, they are welcome to attend this gathering.   If you cannot attend Sunday, but would like to see this church, you could call Harold Sims at 502-839-3027 --- that is if you can catch him.   He is usually out in his yard working - or in someone else's yard.   Would be best to call him the night before you come.   He would be happy to show you the church and talk to you about the project.

They hope to eventually probe for graves and stones and restore the cemetery.   They do have a diagram of gravesites even though most of the stones are buried.
