KGS Supports the new Kentucky History Center

Start of construction of the building in 1996.

This shot taken looking North, from the corner of Ann and Broadway.   The State Office Building is in the background.   The Old Capitol, the home of the KHS, is a half-block away, to your left, out of reach from this photo.

The completed building, which opened in April 1999.

We encourage our members to help with the fund-raising efforts of the KHS Foundation. These monies will be used to furnish the new building and provide state-of-the-art items, such as computer workstations, etc.
The KHS is offering two avenues for donations that we find most interesting.
The Pathway into Kentucky History allows you to purchase a brick, which will be placed into the walkways outside of the new building. Same as with the leaf on the tree, you can inscribe something on the brick. You can have 3 lines, up to 12 characters each.
KHS's web page for this circa 2003, here.
The Kentucky Family Tree has 1000 leaves, and is on permanent display in the new building.   You can purchase a leaf on this tree for $200, and inscribe anything you want on your leaf (subject to approval by the KHS).   This is a great way to honor someone, and memorialize them for all to see. You can have 3 lines, 20 characters each.
KHS's web page for this circa 2003, here.

Longtime KGS Board Member, Brian Harney, purchased one of the first leaves on the tree, and honored Mills Harney and Nancy Richey, his ancestors.
He also inscribed their year of arrival in Kentucky (1795, now known to be 1792), plus their home county (Nicholas).

The Kentucky Family Tree is located in the library of the Ky History Center.
You can get a better view of it on the above link at KHS.
KGS President, Al Alfaro, bought a number of bricks, which are placed near the front entrance of the History Center.
The KGS now gives Bricks to our awardees.
We used to give out plaques, but a Brick has more lasting value, don't you think?
KGS Gives $10,000 to the Kentucky History Center
At the May 98 Board Meeting it was decided to give the KHC an additional $5000, for a total of $10,000.   The KGS is now the proud sponsor of the trunk of the Kentucky Family Tree which is on permanent display in the new History Center.   Here's the nice letter of thanks from Dr Jim Klotter, KHS Director.   Note that KGS members made this donation possible.   The KGS Board thanks each and every member for your support, and we hope that you'll get to come visit the new center someday.   What better way to leave a legacy, than through this donation.
The first $5000 was given at the KGS 1997 Seminar.   More Info.

Note that the KGS also donated its library to the KHS in 1999.   This collection, formerly housed at the Ky State Archives, and valued at $20,000, is being cataloged and merged into the KHS collection.   The KGS also donated $3000 for the processing of the library, to get the items cataloged into the OCLC database, so genealogists worldwide can better locate these books and other materials.   The KGS Library was built with many hours of labor and love by longtime KGS Librarian, Roberta Padgett.   Most of the books in the KGS Library were donated, or purchased, by KGS members, so again, we thank you, and future generations will thank you for preserving these records and stories.
